SOCIAL APP TIK TOK’S EFFECT ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

 

Social app Tik Tok is making a lane for itself as it becomes one of the fastest growing apps with 500 million active monthly users. Tik Tok’s foremost focus is audio to ensure that credit is given in a timely matter. The video element of the app simply accompanies the audio, which essentially becomes free marketing for the audio. The most famous case of this is the story of Lil Nas X and his rise to fame with hit song “Old Town Road”. Before anyone knew who Lil Nas X was, he created the #OldTownRoadChallenge via Tik Tok where for three weeks, people all over the world dressed like a cowboy, dancing to his song. That hashtag now has over 500 million views. Of course there is no formula for viral, however, the popularity of this app will most likly be the platform for more music artist to get their big break. ByteDance LLC. the parent company of Tik Tok has ongoing deals with Universal Music Group, Sony, and Warner to potientially create a streaming service of their own to compete with Spotify, Apple Music and more, so keep a close eye on them.
