500,000 MASTER RECORDINGS LOST

Tupac, Janet Jackson, Tom Petty, 50 cent, John Coltrane and hundreds of musical acts have something in common. In 2008, Universal Music Group’s master recording vault caught fire and over 700 musical artist lost their master recordings. Oh, you never heard of this I bet. UMG tried to keep it low key, but recent articles by New York Times and others have unveiled more about the fires. UMG tried to claim all masters were still safe, but that turned out to be a lie. Some of music’s most iconic figures lost the rights to their masters. Hundreds of millions of dollars would have been paid out to these artist thru royalty statements. With better technology in this day and age, like blockchain and decentralized storage, let’s hope UMG has begun better practices of protecting master recordings. Check out Digibyte, V-ID and Siacoin for protection alternatives of data.
