SOCIAL APP TIK TOK’S EFFECT ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Social app Tik Tok is making a lane for itself as it becomes one of the fastest growing apps with 500 million active monthly users. Tik Tok’s foremost focus is audio to ensure that credit is given in a timely matter. The video element of the app simply accompanies the audio, which essentially becomes free marketing for the audio. The most famous case of this is the story of Lil Nas X and his rise to fame with hit song “Old Town Road”. Before anyone knew who Lil Nas X was, he created the #OldTownRoadChallenge via Tik Tok where for three weeks, people all over the world dressed like a cowboy, dancing to his song. That hashtag now has over 500 million views. Of course there is no formula for viral, however, the popularity of this app will most likly be the platform for more music artist to get their big break. ByteDance LLC. the parent company of Tik Tok has ongoing deals with Universal Music Group, Sony, and Warner to potientially create a streaming service of their own to compete with Spotify, Apple Music and more, so keep a close eye on them.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Music technology is the new music industry, but how does it effect the already starving artist. In the music technology world, AI has been the the talk of the industry. New companies such as Mubert allow users to select a mood, and the AI program will create new, original, royalty-free music in real time. Now determining if the music actually touches the “soul” is up to the user. This will however have a natural effect on the industry considering music licensees will now have an option to create music versus shop for music. Some of these technology business models will compensate composers to upload their music for the AI to recreate alternative versions. AI Jukedeck, a UK-based AI Music startup which has raised $2.5m to date from investors such as Cambridge Innovation Capital, plus Parkwalk Advisors, Backed VC and Playfair Capital. There is still a while before AI music is mainstream, but it is one of those technologies that’s coming, ready or not.

VEST – NIPSEY’S MUSIC TECH INVESTMENT

Before his passing, the great Nipsey Hussle had his hands in more than a few projects. Some of which were heavily involved with blockchain technology. Vezt is one of those projects and we feel like you should know about it. With this app, users a can invest in a song and recieve portions of royalties, similar to stocks, except with music. This benefits the artist because they can potential recieve money advances for a project by the fans without having to take loans from labels or banks. This pays off for the fans/investors because they now own a piece of that song so when the artist is paid royalties, portions of that check is deposited into the fans VEZT account. Imagine that, having a catalog of music that you own portions of. Nipsey believed in it, and so should you. A beta version is available in both on IOS and Android.

500,000 MASTER RECORDINGS LOST

Tupac, Janet Jackson, Tom Petty, 50 cent, John Coltrane and hundreds of musical acts have something in common. In 2008, Universal Music Group’s master recording vault caught fire and over 700 musical artist lost their master recordings. Oh, you never heard of this I bet. UMG tried to keep it low key, but recent articles by New York Times and others have unveiled more about the fires. UMG tried to claim all masters were still safe, but that turned out to be a lie. Some of music’s most iconic figures lost the rights to their masters. Hundreds of millions of dollars would have been paid out to these artist thru royalty statements. With better technology in this day and age, like blockchain and decentralized storage, let’s hope UMG has begun better practices of protecting master recordings. Check out Digibyte, V-ID and Siacoin for protection alternatives of data.

MATT MCWATERS X TAKU – WHITE

Jakarta Records has released a new track with the labels Ta-Ku featuring a new and cool artist by the name of Matt Mcwaters. The track is a smooth, jazzy soundscape of electric pianos, consistent 16th hats with a swing, and airy vocals by Mcwaters. Subtle breakdown’s throughout the song introduce exaggerated reverb to add to effect of distance presented throughout the song. Without a doubt the duo kept it 8Flat on this one!
